RuneScape, sometimes referred to as RuneScape 3,is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and printed by Jagex, first published in January 2001. RuneScape was initially a browser game constructed with the Java programming language, but was largely replaced with a standalone C++-coded client in 2016. The sport has had over 200 million accounts made and is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's largest and most-updated free MMORPG.


RuneScape takes place on the planet of Gielinor, a medieval fantasy realm divided into different kingdoms, areas, and cities.Players can travel throughout Gielinor through a number of methods such as on foot, magical spells, or charter ships.Each area offers several types of creatures, resources, and quests to challenge gamers.

Players are represented at the game with customisable avatars. RuneScape does not follow a linear narrative; instead, players set their own goals and objectives. Players can opt to fight non-player character (NPC) monsters, complete quests, or increase their expertise in the available abilities. Players socialize with each other through gambling, chatting, or by participating in mini-games and activities, a few of which are competitive or combative in nature, but some need cooperative or collaborative play.

The first public version of RuneScape premiered in January 2001 in beta form, with Jagex as its own copyright holder being formed later that year. The next iteration of this game, known as RuneScape 3, has been released in July 2013. Old School RuneScape, a different, old version of this game relationship from August 2007 premiered in February 2013, and is maintained alongside the first customer. It had been announced that mobile ports of both versions of RuneScape would be published for Android and iOS devices in 2018.

Players start in a mountainous area, where they are obtained through a tutorial, a set path where they know the simplest skills in RuneScape.After the tutorial, players have access to tutors and advisers situated in the towns they explore, who can give players proper details regarding their respective skills.

Players set their own targets and objectives as they play with the game. They could train their in-game skills, engage non-player character (NPC) monsters and other players in combat and complete quests at their discretion.Players socialize with each other through trading, chatting or simply by engaging in mini-games.

Skills
There are 28 skills in RuneScape, 17 skills accessible to free-to-play players and an additional 11 for members, allowing players to perform various activities allowing for interaction with NPCs, the environment and other players. Players gain experience points at a skill when they use it. For instance, mining an ore trains the mining ability, and when the player assembles enough experience points at the ability, their character will"level up".As an ability level rises, the ability to recover better raw materials and produce better products increases, as does the encounter given if the participant employs new skills. Combat
RuneScape features a semi-real-time battle system. Combat is an important aspect of the game, allowing gamers to conquer creatures to get dropped items or to finish quests. A battle level is a sign of how successful a player or NPC is in combat. For players, it is set by using a mathematical formula for their combat skills.Players engage in combat by clicking on the enemy they want their character to attack and will automatically continue fighting until they kill their opponent, perish, or escape in the struggle. The majority of the game's weapons are either medieval or fantastical in nature, and comprise various strengths and weaknesses. Players may also summon a familiar to assist with battle,use special attacks known as"skills" to deal additional damage,and use the Prayer skill to enhance their battle prowess.

Combat is divided into three main classes: melee, magic and triumphed. Melee attacks are near selection,magic attacks focus on using runestones to throw spells,and ranged attacks use projectile weapons such as arrows, darts or throwing knives.These combat types make up a"Combat Triangle", which governs effectiveness of styles at a rock-paper-scissors style; melee beats ranged, ranged beats magic, magical beats melee, and each personality is neutral to itself.The advantages and disadvantages of this combat triangle apply to both NPCs and player competitions. Players are not required to pick a character class nor are they jump to some particular category of combat. They could freely change between or blend the 3 types of battle by changing weapons and armour.

Combat is regulated by a life points program. Every combatant has a maximum capacity of life points, and dies when their health is depleted to 0. Missing life points could be retrieved by consuming certain food or beverages, or casting abilities. Players who perish reappear at a respawn point of their choice with their own life and ability points revived; nevertheless they fall all but three selected items, as well as certain frequent items.Dying spawns a gravestone which will hold all of the participant's items and will last for an allotted timenevertheless, there are scenarios in which items will be lost upon death. Legacy Mode enables players to switch to the combat system and interface from prior to June 2012 instead of the Evolution of Combat system.


Player versus player combat (PvP) can be performed in specific controlled mini-games and in a place known as the Wilderness. The Duel Arena enables players to stake money and items,while other PvP games offer their own rewards. In the Wilderness, players can engage in battle provided their combat levels fall within a certain range of each other, and if a player kills their opponent they will be able to claim their opponent's items as a reward.

Before December 2007, players went to the Wilderness to fight other players within a particular battle level array, expecting to kill them gain their items.In December 2007, the Wilderness was altered to prevent gamers from shifting in-game things for real-world currency.PvP battle was taken out of the Wilderness and temporarily limited to fresh mini-games named Bounty Hunter and Clan Wars.Bounty Hunter was replaced by special Bounty Worlds on 6 May 2009 where players were restricted into the Wilderness and may be assigned specific targets to kill.

Non-player interaction
NPCs populate the kingdom of Gielinor. Some NPCs, like shopkeepers and a few characters in quests, are unavailable for combat. But most NPCs may be assaulted and these are generally referred to as creatures. Monsters range from ordinary, non-toxic animals, like cows and goblins, to unique and often much more powerful creatures, like the Queen Black Dragon, Telos, and Vorago.


Most monsters have their own strengths and flaws, notable exceptions being certain managers, which have no specific weaknesses. Demons, by way of instance, have a weak defence against ranged attacks, while metal dragons have very large defence against ranged. The weakness of an individual monster is displayed in an interface over its own model, along with its battle degree and lifepoints.

Monsters may either be aggressive or non-aggressive. Non-aggressive monsters discount players unless attacked, while aggressive monsters may strike all players or may only attack players with combat levels below a predetermined level, based on the circumstances or place. History and development
Andrew Gower developed RuneScape with the guidance of his brother Paul Gower.It was initially conceived as a text-based MUD, but images were incorporated early in development, adding it to the ranks of what were then called"graphical MUDs". The first public version of the game used a combination of three-dimensional and two-dimensional sprites. It was released as a beta version on 4 January 2001, also initially operated from their parents' house in Nottingham.In December 2001, the Gower brothers, along with Continuous Tedder, formed Jagex to take over the business aspects of running RuneScape.Among its ancient innovations Jagex developed an translated domain-specific scripting language called RuneScript, which can be used by RuneScape's server for occasion handling.In February 2002, a monthly membership service was introduced, permitting access to added features such as new locations, quests, and items not readily available to free users.


Ranged combat in RuneScape Classic

On 16 May 2006, Jagex updated RuneScape's game engine, improving the game's loading times and reducing its memory requirements.On 1 July 2008, Jagex introduced a beta of the"High Detail" mode for associates, that was prolonged to free players two weeks later.Before the launching, Jagex stated it could be shown in the 2008 E3 trade show.

In an interview in May 2008, former Jagex CEO Geoff Iddison stated that,"We do plan to proceed East with it [RuneScape] into the Asian marketplace and the Eastern European marketplace also" [...]"RuneScape is not for Japan, but it could work well in Malaysia for example. And where's India in all this? I believe RuneScape is a game which would be adopted in the Indian world and the local-speaking Indian universe. We're looking at all those markets individually."
